technology

Being a child of the 60's, personal computers did not exist until after I had left high school, where we had a very brief introduction to data input in my final year. It wasn't until the mid 90's, when I attempted university studies in librarianship by distance education, that I had any real contact with them, and that was very brief. One of the core subjects was "Introduction to Computers", which I passed without any real knowledge. At the time, I was hand-writing my assignments, and struggled to borrow a type-writer. In fact, I had never learned to type, either, with that being a subject taught at the technical schools to train secretaries. Back then, typing was not perceived to be of an advantage to university students. Now, technology is everywhere! It is at school, in the workplace, in our living rooms, in the kitchen- it pervades every area of our lives. When I was a child, I had several pen-pals who I used to write letters to, and exchange stamps with. I had a friend in Japan, Korea, Ghana and New York. I got their addresses from comic book ads. We would send a photo of ourselves, and look forward to receiving any new mail through the postal service. Now, you just click on a mouse, and can contact any number of people anywhere in the world. Television was in black and white, and wireless referred to the radio! My children have grown up with, and adapt very easily to any new technology. For them, it is second nature, and they can't understand the difficulty that my generation and I have. Everything is faster. Sometimes, I just want to turn everything off, and just listen to the quiet.
